As children, we all experience trauma.
And in experiencing this trauma, we learn how to cope with it for means of survival
This is where we develop coping mechanisms.
We use coping mechanisms to avoid feeling stress, pain, unpleasant emotions, or to try to get our needs met.
It helps us to regulate our nervous system.
Some coping mechanisms are more obvious such as alcohol, drugs, smoking, impulse spending, self harm, disordered eating, etc.
Other coping mechanisms are NOT as obvious. These can include but are not limited to:
Dissasociation (aka shutting down or ignoring the obvious)
Isolation
Positive focus
Meditation
Affirmations
Distancing
Staying busy
Over-analyzing
Overthinking
Co-dependency
Seeking validation
Deflection
Self distraction
Disengagement
Venting
Denial
Blame shifting
Spiritual rituals
Breathwork
Napping
And basically anything that you would use to soothe the wounded inner child living within you.
These coping mechanisms may work for a period of time and serve us in our life.
BUT is it unsustainable
