Does alcohol or other addictive behaviors take up too much of your time in life?
I know it did me, as I shared yesterday in my other episode
We are surrounded by dopamine hits In fact, it wasn’t until Facebook came into my life, that I got addicted, without knowing it, to dopamine in a different way then exercise.
Dopamine is healthy and good…..until it isn’t
Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter. Your body makes it, and your nervous system uses it to send messages between nerve cells. That’s why it’s sometimes called a chemical messenger.
Dopamine plays a role in how we feel pleasure. It’s a big part of our unique human ability to think and plan. It helps us strive, focus, and find things interesting.
Your body spreads it along four major pathways in the brain. Like most other systems in the body, you don’t notice it (or maybe even know about it) until there’s a problem.
Too much or too little of it can lead to a vast range of health issues. Some are serious, like Parkinson’s disease. Others are much less dire.
When it’s too much and spikes your cortisol, which creates too much stress hormone and can trigger trauma responses such as fight, flight, freeze or fawn.
This is something I knew a TON about being an Ironman Triathlete and lifelong sugar addict….no more bears to run from (like cavemen) however, we are surrounded by external experiences that create an internal pressure that can cause us to go way too fast in life.
Then add in life stressors and getting out of balance/alignment with my mind/body/spirit, and then it was easy to get sucked into many different dopamine hit, people pleasing behaviors that cause me to get “lost” in the game of life I had ZERO boundaries before I knew it – working 7 days a week or being “ON” and available.
Not being conscious of who I was or what I wanted out of life
Which then led me to set goals that weren’t really mine
All started with dopamine hits that were starting to overwhelm and numb my mind and create shiny object syndrome
Can you relate?
Today I will tell you how my binge drinking habit, while very painful and cost me a lot of time (and money), was a GIFT And instead of staying in shame/guilt/blame mode, I got REAL with myself and went inward on a journey to find some deeply amazing answers
