This a part 1 of a 4 part series on “The ADHD Entpreneur”
I have recently witnessed that this diagnosis/labeling of “ADHD” has run rampant at almost epidemic proportions
As of late, I have heard more and more people 40 and older get diagnosed with ADHD – all the way up to people in their late 60s. Friends, influencers, clients and then some (I would say at least 1-2 people a week are telling me about their diagnosis)
And many of them are feeling better about themselves as a result and I’ve got to say, based on my own life experience and coaching….this has got me very curious and concerned (let me explain!).
This article, I warn you, may be triggering, especially if you have this diagnosis…..while that isn’t my intention, I also would be curious as to how you do notice you respond to what I am sharing today.
Feel free to email me 🙂
With many of these people telling me this news, come to find out some of those are self diagnosed, society diagnosed and only some are doctor diagnosed
Interestingly enough, most (I would say 90%) are entrepreneurs
Coincidence?
I think not.
Interestingly enough, if I looked at my own childhood and life….I certainly could also self diagnose or go to the doctor and give my “symptoms” and I have NO doubt they would diagnose me if I mentioned that I thought I had ADHD
This has caused me to pause and reflect on my path and the entrepreneurial path in general and how society has sort of directed us to these diagnosis
Note that I also have coached people with ADHD diagnoses (both doctor prescribed medications AND self diagnosis)
I have helped them get off their medications and live better lives in as little as 90 days, some upwards to 6 months or more of deep transformative work, healthy habit shifts, meditation, improved sleep, shadow work, microdosing, etc.
AND it all helped them shift in their business, relationships, income, etc.
Many have also NO longer identified with the label of ADHD as well (their choice)
So, while this article might piss someone off (and I hope it does actually), it needed to be written/said what I see is going on here and I am coming from love and compassion and actually hope!
I believe most people are misdiagnosed and falling victim to this “label”
And someone needs to advocate for them – if not themselves
I know what labels do to people – I was diagnosed with an “autoimmune disease” in 2011 and I saw when I joined Facebook groups to better understand this “dis-ease”, there were THOUSANDS of people in it all complaining and owning their disease like a badge of painful honor, misery was loving company and they all were hanging on the proverbial cross
I got out as fast as I got in…..it felt too “off” and scary/victim consciousness. They blamed a lot of life on this label/diagnosis
My medical doctor even had the nerve to tell me, “Oh, you have only one autoimmune disease now…..just wait, you’ll have more soon enough”
The bastard was smiling and nodding his head at that thought.
Here’s the deal on why I get so fired up about this BS of labels and throwing words around
Once we receive a word or a label….we can often “wear” it or say it a LOT and own it, which changes our very DNA and cellular structure.
Once we repeat it, it gives it power and causes it to start to calcify more into our bodies and reinforces it into our subconscious mind.
This is the antithesis to ancient ayurvedic wisdom 101.
In ayurvedic medicine they don’t use labels or diagnosis words like “cancer” or “adhd” because they know words are powerful.
They look at the holistic person as nature and divinity….instead of placing labels or words.
Once you label something and use that over and over again, it calcifies in the body and can spread like a virus
I never embraced the label of my own dis-ease. That is how/why I have lived (mostly) symptom free for 14 years with a dis-ease of my thyroid (won’t use the label here just to prove my point!)
I forget that I even have “that which shall not be named” and am blissfully ignorant of it 90% of the time.
Also, I have coached over 20,000 people since the year 2000 (before cell phones and social media were “hip”)
I’ve seen the trends SLOWLY going where they have gone over the past 2+ decades
And it ain’t pretty
Most, if not all of those 20K people, were focused on daily habit changes (health/wellness/meditation/nutrition/business income producing activities/relationship building, etc)
So while I wish I had taken a lot more stats and attention as I helped people with mental/physical/emotional health all these decades….i do have a LOT of personal experience
I even had my schools threaten/suggest highly that my kids had the “A” word (as they called it) and I didn’t allow that to happen
Now hear me out….I am NOT saying EVERYONE that has this diagnosis (same as my autoimmune disease) isn’t legitimate and doesn’t warrant medication or treatment of sorts.
The DANGER here that I am talking about is the “me too” movement of wearing this label (officially diagnosed or self diagnosed) is the addiction to it – the “I AM” statement
CLICK HERE for some Instagram humor on this subject to also express how this is almost like an eery “movement”
Having done a lot of generational trauma work….I know the “it runs in the family” concept all too well
it is almost always trauma that runs in the family versus the dis-ease as the true ROOTS of what is happening or presenting in the body….no the actual dis-ease itself
Once we buy into the label, we are unconsciously wired (from birth and ancestral trauma) to wear it like our first and last name.
We might as well add these labels to our driver’s license at that point.
Words matter and labels are words that can cut like a knife and destroy a life – causing us to fall victim to a predatory system that doesn’t want us to get to the root causes of health issues
It’s not surprising to see this increase during a planetary awakening at all…..because their is a spiritual awakening that is happening now that is creating more death, more suicide, more addiction and the inability to focus/stay grounded
It’s literally in the ether “soup” energetically – we are SURROUNDED by this
Here is the basic definition of ADHD and an important point to this article – as found on google search:
“Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are developmentally inappropriate and impair daily functioning. These symptoms can manifest in various ways, affecting cognitive, academic, behavioral, emotional, and social aspects of life.
-
Neurodevelopmental Disorder:ADHD is a disorder that affects the way the brain develops and functions.
-
Persistent Patterns:The symptoms of ADHD are not occasional lapses but consistent and ongoing behaviors.
-
Inattention:Individuals with ADHD may struggle with focusing, maintaining attention, staying organized, and following through with tasks.
-
Hyperactivity:This may involve restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty sitting still, and excessive activity, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (.gov).
-
Impulsivity:This can manifest as acting without thinking, interrupting others, and having difficulty waiting their turn, notes the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (.gov). “
Here’s the deal – in reading that on google – I could absolutely self diagnose myself with that diagnosis (aka label) as an entrepreneur/mom/creative who has a lot of friends, a lot of passion and loves life!
i love variety! And can’t be shoved into a box 🙂 I like to create my own day and my own life
it’s institutions and corporations that want to put us in a box – that will make even a mouse fidget and make outbursts!
I’ve been an entrepreneur for 25 years (tried to work for employers….but got fired the last time I did that, so it’s just not for me!)
Having coached and hung around entrepreneurs for 25 years, I can also say, I’ve been IN the front line trenches of what it takes to actually be successful AND ride the waves of stress, unpredictable income, rejection a plenty, highs and lows like a roller coaster, juggling marriage/kids/life/health issues/recessions (even homelessness on my side)
Being an entrepreneur is NOT for the faint of heart
It isn’t easy to focus when you are juggling a LOT of business tasks and life together, sometimes all at once
Now that I’ve been on the healing practitioner side and seen what trauma does to the brain and body connection (truly shuts it down and often causes trauma responses galore), I see ADHD all over the place, IF I were to call it that.
And as a woman who has given up on labels and identity crisis wording, I don’t like to use labels anymore
i could have diagnosed my kids, my partner, and ALL OF MY CLIENTS with this if I were a doctor
I chose, rather, to help my clients to get to the ROOT CAUSES of their symptoms (aka ADHD) and peel back the layers of the proverbial onion, heal the body mind connection, get the right tools into their daily habits, help them slow the body mind DOWN and regulate the central nervous system…..and then guess what?
They got off the medications (see testimonial example 1 at the end of this article) and were able to start and focus on building their business the sustainable way with proper guidance and entrepreneurial coaching.
I have seen that multiple times with my own clients and with other healing practitioners in the space
POINT 1 – TRAUMA RESPONSES
Take a look at this image of trauma responses for a second and see if you see any resonance or similarity with the ADHD symptoms (all of which I had personally and have seen in well over half of the people I’ve worked with since 2000)
I suffered with all of these above UNCONSCIOUSLY. I became heavily addicted and distracted by social media in 2011 being an entrepreneur. I had no idea I was trying to escape
Next came text messaging and smart phone addiction with phone apps….hello! My brain was friend with so much dopamine I didn’t know which end was up! The older I got, the worse it got. Before i knew it I unconsciously drank more and more alcohol as I was mindlessly scrolling and escaping my reality (see point 2 for environment on more to that point)
I was ALL over the place and exhibiting most/ if not all of the ADHD symptoms
Outbursts, fidgeting, lack of focus and forgetting things, and the list goes on and on
Once i started healing myself, however, at the ancestral root/childhood trauma level and allowing my shadows to be seen/felt and alchemized….then and ONLY then
Once I also got my business systems more balanced and in place and my environment more in alignemtn with my truth (see points 2 and 3 as they get written), the game changed
I have never felt more focused, more at peace, less juggling, less outbursts/interruptions of others, better boundaries in place and the list goes on and on and on
If you have ever studied Carl Jung or Gabor Mate (google them), you will know the wisdom behind trauma responses (we are not our trauma by the way), then and only then can we change our habits or behaviors
If you have ever read When the Body Keeps The Score, you will also know what I mean….how body holds on to SO much and messes with our brain in our head, which limits us. There is so much more unknown about the body mind connection than we can even say
We’ve got to simply become curious, compassionately conscious of ALL of these in order to be the change we want to see in our mental/emotional/physical and yes, even, spiritual health.
Carry on for point 2 below (as I write this as of 5-6-25, I have only completed point #1)
CLICK HERE for an ADHD entrepreneur testimonial that is an amazing example of how you could use this “label” of ADHD to your advantage if you become curious of the root causes of what is really at the core of this diagnosis.
POINT 2 – ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCES EVERYTHING
Empathic energies reside here
Reltionahips reside here
External influences reside here
Take a look around – how does your environment look?
Who is in your environment?
Who do you hang out with on any given day both in person and on zoom?
MORE TO COME IN ANOTHER BLOG POST
POINT 3 – PROPER GUIDANCE/SUPPORT FOR BODY MIND AND BUSINESS
Just like kids, if we don’t have some guidance or direction, we can easily get lost and appear to be all over the place.
Entrepreneurs are creative independent artists that do require some structure and guidance
The tricky part is if your environment isn’t conducive to this and you don’t have the right mentors/support/marriage partner/friends, etc., that is a major problem and can cause MOST, if not all of the ADHD symptoms (again revisit Points 1 and 2 above.
We are a sum of the 5 closest people in our lives, including our family/partner/boss/clients, etc
Case in point, if you are an entrepreneur and attracting the wrong clients for you (vibrational frequency lower due to incomplete trauma/shadow work, etc), you will self sabotage yourself all the way to the bank and not be focused, have outbursts, not be regulated in your central nervous system…..the list goes on and on.
If you are married to the wrong partner or have a business partner that doesn’t suit you, you will be wearing masks and people pleasing or become codependent and be completely out of alignment. It’s worse if you have this at home and at work and while sleeping with that person! Your central nervous system is never feeling safe…..and SAFETY is critical for the root chakra and for staying/feeling grounded and secure.
Insecurities about in home and work life situations and you will stay out of alignment….even with the best of medications, so on an so forth.
You won’t make healthy food choices, you won’t sleep well…..and on and on and on.
Medical doctors don’t always coach on nutrition, meditation, central nervous system regulation and medications certainly don’t help heal your shadow work/unconscious mind “blocks”
POINT 4 – RAISE IN CONSCIOUSNESS TO MEET YOUR HIGHER SELF – STOP AVOIDING GOING INWARD. THE ANSWERS LIE WITHIN!
undercharging, may suck in online marketing, in person networking, follow up systems, etc. They are dropping leads on the table and leaving money on the table.
Attracting higher quality leads also, lone ranger mentality, don’t have an assistant/VA and struggle with delegation or don’t know how to work with/manage a VA.
They may have fatigue/slight burnout and trend toward overworking, not sleeping well, migraines or energy crashes or ADHD level type distractions
